NASA astronaut and Expedition 75 flight engineer Jessica Watkins conducted research inside the Kibo laboratory module’s Life Science Glovebox on October 9, 2026, where she safely mixed living cell samples with bioink and filled a dedicated cartridge with the resulting cell‑ink mixture.
These operations formed part of the InSPA‑Auxilium Bioprinter‑Cell Printing investigation, which examines the 3D bioprinting of cartilage tissue in microgravity, achieving higher quality than Earth‑based production. The findings could enhance cartilage biomanufacturing, offering benefits to patients on Earth and supporting crew members on extended space missions.
