The newly launched Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is poised to transform our comprehension of the cosmos, particularly by probing dark energy. It is designed for a minimum five‑year mission with a target operational lifespan of ten years.
NASA notes that the telescope’s high‑resolution, wide‑field surveys will enable researchers to study dark energy and dark matter, characterize exoplanets, map billions of galaxies, examine black holes, and observe objects ranging from our solar system to the far edge of the observable universe.
Although the nature of dark matter and dark energy remains a mystery, they are thought to constitute roughly 95 % of the universe.
Dark matter, though invisible, provides the gravitational framework that holds structures together, whereas dark energy is thought to be a repulsive force driving the universe’s accelerated expansion.
The U.S. space agency successfully launched the telescope Sunday morning from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center.
Approximately 30 minutes after liftoff, the Roman spacecraft separated from its SpaceX launch vehicle and is en route to an orbital position roughly one million miles from Earth.
