Australia’s veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon has expressed his resolve to resume Test cricket following a hamstring injury sustained during the Ashes victory at Adelaide in December 2025. The 38-year-old, who last played since that match, has maintained rigorous recovery efforts, including gym sessions five days weekly, 700km of cycling, and near-full running capacity. He now intends to resume turf bowling soon.
Cricket Australia’s physical performance coach Ross Herridge confirms Lyon has met key physical milestones in his rehabilitation, noting progress through a structured recovery pathway.
“We’re about two-thirds through the process. It was a traumatic injury, but we’ve tracked physical markers consistently,” Herridge stated, per cricket.com.au.
Selection Chief George Bailey remains cautious, acknowledging Lyon’s age and the injury’s severity might limit his availability for consecutive Tests.
“A significant hamstring tear at 38 raises realism about returning to elite performance. It could mean rotating rather than playing all Tests,” Bailey remarked.
“No one has a guaranteed spot in the Australian team. I’m dedicated to performing at my best and am fully committed to playing every Test I’m selected for,” Lyon declared.
