NATO Condemns Russian Drone Incursion After Attack on Romanian Residential Area]

A Romanian government official confirmed that a drone strike onto a residential building in Galati on Friday represents a serious escalation from Russia. The incident occurred during an overnight Russian attack on neighboring Ukraine. Romanian authorities reported that the drone crashed onto the roof of a 10-story apartment complex, causing an explosion and fire that resulted in injuries to two individuals.

Romania’s Foreign Affairs Ministry stated that both allies and NATO leadership have been informed about the incident. The ministry further indicated that Romania has requested accelerated delivery of anti-drone defense capabilities to strengthen its air defenses.

NATO issued a strong condemnation of the attack, with a spokesperson declaring, “We condemn Russia’s recklessness, and NATO will continue to strengthen our defenses against all threats, including drones.” The alliance emphasized its commitment to bolstering defenses across all domains in response to the growing threat posed by drone warfare.

As a NATO and EU member bordered by Ukraine, Romania has documented 28 separate instances of Russian drones penetrating its airspace since Moscow intensified attacks on Ukrainian Danube river ports. Friday’s event marked the first occurrence of a Russian drone striking a populated area within Romania and causing casualties, likely heightening tensions on the alliance’s eastern frontier amid concerns over the conflict’s spillover effects.

Romania’s Defense Ministry reported that drone fragments have landed on its territory at least 47 times, according to officials. Emergency responders extinguished the resulting fire and evacuated approximately 70 residents, with one woman and child transported to hospitals suffering minor injuries, while two others received treatment on-site for shock. A second drone without explosives was discovered near Basesti in western Romania on Thursday, prompting local authorities to secure the area for investigation into its presence and origin.

Concurrently, Ukrainian officials detected drone attacks targeting the strategic Izmail port in the Odesa region early Friday. Located near the Romanian border, Izmail serves as Ukraine’s primary Danube River port and has frequently been subjected to Russian assaults.

In April, Galati experienced another drone incident that damaged infrastructure and triggered temporary evacuations. During the latest attack, Romania deployed two F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter to monitor the situation, with pilots authorized to intercept incoming drones. Residents in nearby border communities were urged to seek shelter. While Romanian law permits shooting down drones during peacetime when lives or property are threatened, the capability has never been exercised.

The incident occurs amid broader regional instability, as recent weeks have seen Ukrainian drones enter Baltic airspace, creating further complications and elevated tensions with Russia.
