NATO denounces Russian drone recklessness after crash in Romanian apartment block

Romanian authorities reported that a Russian drone, launched as part of an overnight attack on Ukraine, crashed into an apartment building in eastern Romania, injuring two people.

Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced the incident as a “grave and irresponsible escalation” by Russia and informed NATO and its allies, urging the rapid transfer of anti‑drone capabilities.

NATO condemned Russia’s “recklessness” and pledged to strengthen defenses against all threats, including drones.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed solidarity with Romania, stating that the attack “crossed yet another line” and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to bolstering security on its eastern border.

French Minister for European Affairs Benjamin Haddad warned that the incident underscores Russia’s threat to European security and highlighted the presence of French troops in Romania as part of NATO reassurance operations.

In related developments, Russian drones also struck three foreign‑flagged merchant vessels in the Black Sea, igniting fires that crews were able to extinguish, and damaged a Turkish‑owned cargo ship sailing from Odesa, wounding two crew members.

Separately, a Ukrainian drone attack set fire to fuel storage facilities in Russia’s Yaroslavl region, prompting ongoing firefighting efforts.
