The countdown has begun: America’s Sweethearts have returned.
The third season of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders (DCC) docuseries is now streaming on Netflix, featuring higher stakes and even more intense performances than previous installments.
Thanks to a combination of dramatic tension and viral social media moments, the squad—traditionally known for supporting the iconic NFL team—has transitioned into a group of mainstream celebrities.
Breakout stars Kleine Powell and Megan McElaney spoke with BBC Newsbeat regarding the challenges and opportunities presented by their newfound visibility.
The latest season of America’s Sweethearts follows the squad as they navigate the complexities of life in the spotlight following the success of the earlier seasons.
“It has been truly surreal,” Powell remarked when discussing the show’s massive viral reach.
“I believe it has had a profoundly positive impact, not just on the worlds of dance and athletics, but globally, by showing how we integrate our personal lives into the discipline of dance and cheerleading,” she added.
Previous seasons focused heavily on the grueling selection process required to join the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, a highly coveted position for dancers across the United States.
Audiences are frequently introduced to squad director Kelli Finglass, whose candid and often rigorous critiques are a staple of the recruitment process for both veterans and rookies.
Despite the intensity, Finglass notes that the pressure has not discouraged applicants. In fact, this year marked the first time the organization considered tryouts from individuals inspired specifically by watching America’s Sweethearts.
While the exposure from the series can lead to lucrative brand deals and influencer opportunities, Powell emphasizes that new recruits must maintain the right motivations.
“We need people who prioritize being a friend and a teammate over selfish pursuits,” Powell explained.
“We are looking for individuals who can be a sister and a support system—someone you can rely on to lift your spirits during a difficult day.”
