WASHINGTON — The U.S. Navy has announced a new recruitment drive to bring commercial technology leaders into its Reserve’s Navy Innovation Unit (NIU). The program follows similar efforts by the Army and Marine Corps to infuse advanced industry expertise into their reserve forces.

On June 12, the Navy opened the search for senior engineers, software architects, and other technical executives with experience in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, autonomous and unmanned systems, among other specialties. “We’ve received over 200 applications for the direct‑commission officer program to date,” said Benjamin Kohlmann, Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs, to Breaking Defense. “Applicants span renowned tech companies, defense primes, and vibrant startups across El Segundo, Austin, and beyond.”

The initiative mirrors the Marine Corps’ Marine Innovation Unit, launched in 2023 to draw civilian talent into its Reserve to accelerate advanced capabilities. Likewise, the Army’s Detachment 201, established in 2025, recruited senior tech executives as senior advisors, commissioning figures such as Palantir’s CTO Shyam Sankar and Meta’s CTO Andrew Bosworth as lieutenant colonels.

“We’ve collaborated closely with the Army to refine marketing, structuring, and ongoing improvement,” Kohlmann noted. “Their experience provides valuable feedback, and we strive to implement consistent best practices.”

The Navy intends to keep the program focused, aiming to begin commissioning officers in the fall. Candidates may commission up to the rank of commander. Kohlmann added, “We’re still defining the precise footprint, but we plan to select individuals by early October and commission them by then.”

Selected personnel will attend Officer Development School (ODS) in Newport, Rhode Island, for a five‑week orientation to acclimate them to naval operations— a standard process for direct‑commission officers from legal, medical, or other professional backgrounds.

Reserve members will join the unit at their existing rank or rate. Applications remain open until July 31.

“Our ultimate benchmark is a sustained, insatiable demand from active‑duty commanders for the expertise of these skilled reservists in the coming years,” Kohlmann said.
