The Travelers Championship PGA Tour event faced a weather delay lasting nearly 90 minutes during its final round on Sunday at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut. The delay extended into the 7 p.m. ET start time of Sunday Night Baseball between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, but NBC maintained its focus on the golf tournament, which resumed play at 7:20 p.m. ET. Rather than switching to the baseball broadcast, the network aired segments of the Women’s PGA Championship during the delay, with the Yankees-Red Sox game available only on Peacock and NBCSN.
The choice drew criticism and mockery on social media from baseball fans anticipating full coverage of the Sunday Night Baseball game. This shift in priorities occurs as NBC assumes broadcasting duties for the event in its first year after ESPN’s 33-year tenure, following earlier scheduling conflicts caused by the NBA’s Sunday Night Basketball.
Despite the delay, the Travelers Championship did not conclude on Sunday. Scottie Scheffler secured a playoff berth against Viktor Hovland, which will be decided Monday at 9 a.m. ET. NBC eventually transitioned to the Yankees-Red Sox game around 8:30 p.m. ET, only to catch the broadcast mid-play during a critical at-bat by Boston’s Caleb Durbin, who drove in two runs to give the Red Sox a 2-0 lead.
