William Hilderbrandt welcomed David Fisher, Head of Delegation for the Nepal International Federation of Red Cross, noting that the full scale of the disaster remains unclear. Remote communities are still hard to reach, tens of thousands have been impacted, and initial assessments are only just underway. Yet the central challenge is evident: this situation cannot be addressed as a short‑term humanitarian crisis alone. The actions taken now will shape the future of these communities. Emergency aid must be paired from the start with planning, financing, and implementation for long‑term recovery—including rebuilding homes and restoring livelihoods. Delaying these efforts until global focus shifts could leave many without a full recovery. Moreover, indicators suggest that the intensity and destructive power of such extreme natural events may increase in frequency.
