The exact death toll remains unknown following Wednesday’s catastrophic flooding in northern Nepal. However, the immense scale of the devastation is already apparent from aerial surveys and ground assessments, particularly along the border with Tibet and the gorges of the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli Rivers.
“Our immediate concern is for human life,” wrote Kanak Mani Dixit, a prominent Nepali publisher, on social media. “Following that, the critical infrastructure along the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli corridor.”
According to the Department of Roads, twenty-five miles of roadway have been completely erased. This destruction has isolated roughly 250,000 residents in the hardest-hit districts, rendering them effectively cut off from the outside world, as described by an Indian diplomat.
The surging waters transformed winding riverside roads into barren expanses of mud. Dozens of bridges were swept away, including forty suspension crossings. Furthermore, phone lines, cellular towers, and electrical grids have been knocked out for surviving households.
The devastated area serves as the backbone of Nepal’s hydroelectric sector. On Wednesday, the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation released a memorandum detailing the disruption to power generation, transmission, and distribution, noting that fourteen hydropower projects—including several still under construction—were incapacitated. India’s foreign ministry reported that it has been unable to locate sixty-three Indian workers employed on the Trishuli-1 hydroelectric plant project.
Mr. Dixit cautioned that it is premature to evaluate the catastrophic economic damage. While power generation represents a long-term concern, the immediate priority is providing aid to displaced populations, who require significantly more support than what is currently being airlifted by helicopter.
Keshav Sharma, Nepal’s former secretary for physical infrastructure and transport, stated that while helicopters are essential in the initial days following a disaster, they will soon “prove insufficient.”
“Transportation is the foundation of all rescue operations,” Mr. Sharma explained. “If we need to deliver food, grain, fuel, and even generators, road transport is indispensable.” Heavy machinery will be required to carve minimal tracks through the terrain to reach riverside population centers, after which modular bridges can be erected to cross the waterways.
Mr. Sharma noted that following a less severe flood last summer, he coordinated with China to replace a damaged bridge, while India contributed ten modular bridges during the initial phase of recovery.
Mr. Dixit highlighted Nepal’s robust history of disaster relief, noting that the country possesses “effective, elected local governments” capable of aiding emergency operations. He added that the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and Army are fully mobilized for disaster response.
Ensuring a steady energy supply could present an urgent challenge.
Liquefied petroleum gas had already become scarce in Nepal’s rural villages years ago, even before the U.S. conflict with Iran triggered broader shortages across Asia. In 2015, a diplomatic dispute with India resulted in Nepal’s entire gas supply being detained at the border.
This persistent gas shortage has been a primary driver accelerating Nepal’s construction of massive hydroelectric power projects, many financed by China. These initiatives have enabled the export of surplus energy, particularly to Bangladesh, and have persuaded many Nepalis to transition to electric vehicles.
Following Wednesday’s disaster in northern Nepal, approximately ten percent of the nation’s total hydroelectric capacity was knocked offline. However, power supply has remained uninterrupted in the capital region surrounding Kathmandu.
Residents who recently transitioned to electric induction stovetops, such as licensed tour guide Surajan Pokharel from the capital, expressed no immediate concern. As it is the monsoon season, they anticipate that reservoir water levels will be sufficient to generate enough electricity to offset the losses.
However, in the narrow valleys of the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli Rivers, the situation could be dire without gas or electricity. Mr. Sharma emphasized that the coming week is critical for constructing the roads necessary to deliver emergency energy supplies.
Mr. Pokharel, who has extensively explored the upper valleys, expects that local residents will resort to gathering firewood from the forests to survive until infrastructure is restored.
