Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu launched a sharp critique of French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday, responding to the latter’s recent comments criticizing Israel.
In a statement released Tuesday evening, the prime minister’s office expressed strong disapproval of Macron’s remarks concerning escalating settler violence in the occupied West Bank.
“What is our credibility worth if we remain inactive on Gaza? Some claim that peace has been achieved, but this has not opened up humanitarian deliveries. It is a spectacle that shames us all,” AFP reported, citing Macron.
The French president made these remarks during his opening address at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Additionally, Macron criticized the increasing settler violence in the occupied West Bank, asserting that it “deprives the Palestinian people of their legitimate right to exist”.
In response to Macron’s remarks, Netanyahu’s office asserted, “The grotesque absurdity of Emmanuel Macron’s statement is staggering.”
The office further stated, “Hamas elements carry out attacks against Jews almost daily and have murdered countless Israeli civilians in Judea and Samaria [the West Bank]. Ignorance is no excuse for shedding their blood.”
Smotrich also condemned Macron, accusing him of dishonesty and alleging that Hamas was fueling what he termed Arab terrorism in the West Bank.
