Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving leader, is engaged in a fierce electoral battle as he seeks to convince voters that he remains the only figure capable of ensuring national security. The 77-year-old’s reputation, once built on a security-first platform, was profoundly challenged by the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023. His primary opponent, former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, has capitalized on public discontent, polling closely with Netanyahu and presenting a direct challenge.
Netanyahu is leveraging all available resources, including a high-profile endorsement from former US President Donald Trump, warnings about adversarial powers, and appeals to fears regarding a Palestinian state—a position opposed by a majority of Israelis. His campaign centers on the stark slogan, “Either the Right or Palestine,” emblazoned on posters nationwide.
Amid the election, Netanyahu confronts multiple legal and geopolitical hurdles, including an international arrest warrant over allegations of war crimes in Gaza, an ongoing corruption trial, and a protracted multi-front conflict. He aims to offset these issues by highlighting military achievements since the October 7 attacks, such as operations against Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and Iran itself.
Recently, following a deadly attack by Palestinian gunmen near Hebron, Netanyahu authorized a substantial military operation in the occupied West Bank, vowing to pursue Hamas terrorists relentlessly. This action underscores his commitment to a hardline security approach.
Netanyahu’s Ideological Roots and Vision
Born in Tel Aviv in 1949, Netanyahu’s political ideology was shaped by his father Benzion, a disciple of Zeev Jabotinsky’s Revisionist Zionism, which advocates for a “Greater Israel.” Netanyahu historically opposed the Israeli-Palestinian peace process and now promotes an expansive vision for Israel, including annexation of parts of the West Bank and expansion of settlements, which are deemed illegal under international law.
His personal history includes service in an elite commando unit and participation in the 1973 Arab-Israeli war. A defining tragedy was the death of his elder brother Yonatan during the Entebbe hostage rescue in Uganda, an event Netanyahu described as the end of his life. His upbringing in the United States and education at MIT honed his articulate, telegenic style, which he utilized as a prominent diplomat before entering politics.
Netanyahu’s political career began with his election to parliament in 1988, followed by his leadership of the Likud party in 1993. In 1996, he became Israel’s youngest prime minister at age 46, serving until 1999 and again from 2009 to 2021. He returned to power in late 2022, forming a coalition with far-right elements. For years, he emphasized military strength but also displayed caution, notably by viewing Hamas rule in Gaza as a means to divide Palestinians and undermine the Palestinian Authority.
The October 7 attacks exposed flaws in this strategy. As conflicts escalated, Netanyahu began framing the situation as a transformative regional struggle against Iranian influence, asserting that he has “changed the face of the Middle East.”
Criticism and Political Rivalry
Supporters praise Netanyahu’s decisive military responses and direct confrontation with Iran, actions no previous leader had taken. However, critics argue that his policies have entangled Israel in endless conflicts and damaged its international standing. Eisenkot has declared Netanyahu unfit for office, accusing him of spreading hatred and portraying rivals as enemies.
Despite challenges, Netanyahu retains strong support from Trump, who endorsed him shortly before the election, calling him “the man I want by my side.” Polls suggest Netanyahu may struggle to form a government alone, yet he has a history of defying political predictions. On pro-netanyahu media, he frames the election as existential, urging voters to choose the leader who can “get the job done” for the Jewish state’s continued existence.
