An exclusive preview of the Netflix Brazil original film *Elize: Shadows of a Woman* has been released, offering a glimpse into the high‑profile case of Elize Matsunaga.
In 2012, Matsunaga killed and dismembered her husband inside their São Paulo apartment, a crime that attracted widespread media attention and shocked Brazil.
We are the first to present the trailer for *Elize: Shadows of a Woman*, and we also reveal that the film, announced last year, will debut on Netflix on July 22.
Lorena Comparato portrays Elize Matsunaga, while the supporting cast features Henrique Kimura, Miwa Yanagizawa, Julia Shimura and Denise Weinberg.
The Netflix documentary series *Elize Matsunaga: Once Upon a Crime* previously chronicled the case and remains available on the platform; it was produced by Boutique Filmes, the same company behind the feature film.
Based on the real-life case, the screenplay for *Elize: Shadows of a Woman* was written by author and screenwriter Raphael Montes (also known for *Good Morning, Veronica*) together with Mariana Torres (also of *Good Morning, Veronica*).
“This is not merely a crime film; our goal is to provoke thought and spark a dialogue about violence — what motivated Elize to commit such a brutal act?” said Montes, who is also an associate producer on the film.
“We aimed to portray the woman’s dual nature. While the story may resonate with many, its tragic conclusion is unavoidable,” Torres added.
Felipe Vellas, known for directing Netflix’s Brazilian crime series *Criminal Code*, directs *Elize: Shadows of a Woman*. The film was produced by Gustavo Mello, with Renata Artigas, Marcelo Máximo and Adriana Gaspar serving as executive producers.
