The upcoming KPop Demon Hunters sequel will be released in both theaters and on Netflix, according to Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos. Speaking at an event on September 30, Sarandos stated that select Netflix productions, including this highly anticipated follow-up, will receive a “very broad theatrical release” before being made available to stream. “We’re exploring how to serve movie lovers who prefer the theatrical experience without compromising Netflix’s value or the film’s global positioning,” he explained (via The Wrap).
Other notable Netflix titles, such as Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s La Bola Negra, which will launch with a 45-day theatrical run in November, and The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth (a David Fincher-directed sequel to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood), slated for an IMAX debut, highlight the streaming service’s expanding cinematic strategy. Upcoming projects like Greta Gerwig’s Narnia and a new animated Charlie And The Chocolate Factory adaptation will also hit theaters next year.
Sarandos emphasized that theatrical releases help Netflix retain its most passionate audiences early, rather than losing them to the “I’ll get around to it” demographic. “If Train Dreams had been shown in cinemas first, it would’ve been a positive for the arthouse film,” he noted, referencing the 2025 period drama.
Since its June 2025 Netflix launch, KPop Demon Hunters has been streamed over 325 million times and screened in cinemas globally. While a sequel was confirmed in November, no official release date has been set, with fans speculating it may not debut before 2030. Creator Maggie Kang revealed that a live-action adaptation is unlikely due to the story’s animated tone and humor, which she feels would lose its essence if grounded in reality. “The world and the characters are so suited for animation,” she said, leaving the animated sequel’s plot details under wraps.
