Netflix Secures Exclusive Television Development Deal with Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media

Proximity Media—the production powerhouse established by director Ryan Coogler, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian—has entered into a multi-year exclusive agreement with Netflix to develop original television series for the platform.

This new partnership follows the expiration of the company’s previous overall TV arrangement with Disney earlier this year.

Proximity Media’s television wing has a proven track record of high-profile projects, including Marvel’s “Ironheart,” the National Geographic documentary “Hurricane Katrina: A Race Against Time,” and the upcoming animated “Black Panther” series, “Eyes of Wakanda.”

The move comes amid massive success for Ryan Coogler, whose film “Sinners” grossed $365 million globally and earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The vampire fantasy also secured four additional Oscars, including Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan. Coogler’s extensive portfolio includes the “Black Panther” franchise, “Creed,” and his directorial debut, “Fruitvale Station.”

Zinzi Coogler, a Golden Globe-winning producer, contributed to the success of “Sinners” and has served as an executive producer on “Ironheart,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” and “Creed III.”

Sev Ohanian, also a Golden Globe winner, is a distinguished screenwriter and producer known for “Searching,” “Run,” and “Missing,” and co-produced “Sinners” alongside his Proximity partners.
