Netflix announced Thursday that Joe Pearlman, the BAFTA-nominated filmmaker behind the recent Robbie Williams documentary, will direct an upcoming film exploring the life and career of pop superstar Jessica Simpson.
Pearlman, who also helmed Lewis Capaldi: How I’m Feeling Now, Mourinho, and Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, will guide the as-yet-untitled documentary, set to premiere on Netflix in 2027.
“It’s been over 20 years since Jessica Simpson invited cameras into her life with the reality show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica,” Netflix’s Tudum said of the documentary. “In the years since, she’s sold more than 20 million records worldwide, launched one of the most successful celebrity licensing brands in history, and written a bestselling memoir, Open Book. After a 15-year hiatus from original music, Jessica returned to recording and performing with her two 2025 Nashville Canyon EPs. Now, she’s invited the cameras back in to tell all in a new documentary.”
The documentary promises to provide an intimate “dive deep into the pop star’s life and career.” While Simpson hasn’t been out of the spotlight in the past 15 years thanks to her wildly successful fashion brand, the singer has returned to the entertainment industry in recent years with her musical comeback—including several one-off performances—and an acting role in the recent Kim Kardashian series All’s Fair.
“When I’ve had success in my life is when I’ve just been honest and real,” Simpson told Rolling Stone in March 2025. “I’ve never gotten a chance to do that in music until now.”
