Gary Neville says managers sometimes need to be sacked “for their own good” as he reflected on Manchester United’s decision to retain under‑fire Michael Carrick.
United sit 16th in the Premier League, only a point above the relegation zone, after a dismal 3‑0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday.
Carrick was widely expected to be dismissed following that loss, but the club opted to give the 45‑year‑old head coach an opportunity to turn things around. He will remain in charge for United’s trip to Chelsea on Saturday lunchtime.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Neville suggested United had spent a day deliberating. “I reckon what’s happened in the 24 hours after Bournemouth is that they’ve literally debated it back and forth,” he said. “I don’t know this, but they’ve debated it to the point where they’ve got themselves into a muddle, and thought, ‘we’ll just stay with him.’” He added that staying with Carrick reflected “a result of the lack of planning, the lack of probably available options, the lack of decision‑making around the two people that probably are available. That’s when you’re really struggling.”
Neville also observed, “Sometimes a manager needs sacking for their own good. I needed sacking at Valencia. I was happy that they put me out of my misery.”
Carrick’s position was already precarious before the Bournemouth game after captain Bruno Fernandes criticised the tactics deployed in a 4‑1 Champions League loss at Como the previous week. Fernandes was dropped for the Bournemouth match, but the pair have since held talks to clear the air.
Neville commented on the dressing‑room dynamics: “We’ve all been in football dressing rooms, and they’re quite brutal places.” He added that Fernandes questioning the manager’s tactics after a heavy defeat indicated deeper internal concerns.
After the defeat, United fans sang Carrick’s name as he applauded the crowd during what Neville called “effectively a farewell lap.” The supporters then booed the players as they left the pitch.
