New Order’s longtime keyboardist Gillian Gilbert has publicly revealed that she is living with cancer, offering clarification following a recent Rolling Stone interview featuring her bandmate and husband, Stephen Morris.
During the interview, Morris hinted at personal health concerns when asked about attending the band’s upcoming Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony in November, stating, “I’ve got a bit of a health problem at the minute, which precludes leaving the country for any length of time.”
In response, Gilbert took to social media to set the record straight, writing, “Thankfully [Stephen] is well. It is in fact me, who like many other people, is living with cancer. We completely understand how the misunderstanding arose and simply wanted to ensure that the correct information was shared. We are enormously grateful for everyone’s kindness and support and would appreciate some privacy as I continue with my treatment.”
This announcement follows earlier news that Morris and Gilbert would not be joining New Order for their upcoming South American tour, set to begin in São Paulo, Brazil, in late November. As noted by Rolling Stone, this marks the band’s first performances without Morris, who co-founded New Order alongside Gilbert after the dissolution of Joy Division.
The duo, along with the rest of New Order’s lineup, will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in a joint ceremony honoring both Joy Division and New Order—an honor that comes after multiple previous nominations.
