The first confirmed case of the flesh-eating screwworm was identified in La Pryor, Texas, roughly 30 miles (48 km) from the southern U.S.–Mexico border. Ranchers across the United States now face heightened fears that an outbreak could shrink cattle herds, curb beef production, and push consumer prices upward.
