Recent research highlights that children are experiencing a growing number of heat stress days each year compared to earlier generations, with projections indicating this trend will worsen.
Scientists from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel have identified that younger populations bear a higher burden of health risks, encompassing both immediate physical effects and longer-term challenges such as food and water shortages.
The study, published in the journal Science Advances, reveals that up to 560 million children between 0 and 9 years old are subjected to an additional month of heat stress annually, directly linked to human-induced climate change.
“Climate change is already impacting hundreds of millions of children globally with hazardous heat, creating serious health threats,” stated Rosa Pietroiusti, the lead researcher.
“Concurrently, factors like poverty, poor housing, lack of access to cooling, and strained healthcare systems limit children’s ability to shield themselves from extreme temperatures.”
Greater Susceptibility of Children to Heat Risks
The study notes that vulnerability to heat stress varies by age, with newborns, young children, and older adults being especially at risk.
“Children are particularly susceptible to climate change impacts and will encounter more severe consequences throughout their lives,” the authors emphasized.
Research indicates that children’s exposure to harmful heat surpasses that of other age groups, nearly tripling the 190 million people aged 60-69 facing similar additional threats.
Excessive heat impairs the body’s ability to regulate temperature, worsening existing conditions and raising the likelihood of heatstroke, kidney failure, and lung damage.
In children, the effects are amplified due to ongoing physical development, reduced capacity for body temperature regulation, lower sweat production per kilogram of weight, and higher metabolic rates, causing them to heat up more rapidly during heatwaves.
The researchers found multiple factors contributing to children’s increased heat exposure.
The most significant rises in humid heat due to climate change are occurring in tropical and lower-income regions with youthful populations, such as South Asia, Southeast Asia, and West Africa, where the greatest number of children are currently exposed to dangerous heat stress.
They also observed that children in these areas often face greater socioeconomic challenges, experiencing heat through direct routes like heat exhaustion and indirect means, including the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses, disruptions in child nutrition, and birth complications.
A Grim Outlook for Future Generations
Based on temperature predictions, the study concludes that children will continue to be disproportionately affected by heat stress, even as global populations age.
Under a scenario where warming reaches 1.5°C, it is estimated that 620 million children aged 0-9 would face at least one extra month of heat stress each year, with 390 million enduring five or more months.
If temperatures rise to 2.0°C, projections suggest that 650 million children would experience an additional month of heat stress annually, and 420 million would be exposed to five months or more of such conditions.
