New York Giants Quarterback Jaxson Dart May Face Season-Ending Knee Surgery After Injury in Loss to Rams

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart may require knee surgery that could end his season, according to ESPN.

Giants head coach John Harbaugh said Dart’s injured left knee is being evaluated after the starting quarterback exited Monday night’s loss at the Los Angeles Rams.

Dart was hurt less than four minutes into the game while under pressure on a third-and-eight play.

Rams linebacker Byron Young hit Dart from the quarterback’s right side, driving him into linebacker Josaiah Stewart and causing a hard fall.

Harbaugh declined to confirm reports that the injury is more serious than the initial diagnosis of a sprained medial collateral ligament, which could result in a lengthy absence or season-ending surgery.

After the 28-6 defeat, Harbaugh said the prognosis was “in the neighborhood” and that an MRI would provide more information.

“It’s an ongoing conversation about the health of a player, of a person,” Harbaugh said. “We’ve got to prepare for the range of possibilities.”

Harbaugh said the Giants would share more details and a timeline once the evaluation is complete.

He expressed confidence that backup quarterback Jameis Winston can step in for as long as Dart is unavailable.

The Giants also sustained additional injuries during the game, with top pass rusher Brian Burns spraining his left ankle and left tackle Andrew Thomas appearing to suffer a lower-body injury in the fourth quarter.

Wide receiver Malik Nabers had to pop his right shoulder back into place after dislocating it on the second-to-last play of the first quarter.

“But that’s just part of football,” Burns said. “Guys go down every day, and it’s always next guy up. That’s why you try to develop a culture where you don’t slack off in production with the guys who are behind you.”

Harbaugh said the Giants cannot allow a change in fortune to discourage them.

“All around the league, everybody deals with it,” he said. “This is football. This is the NFL. This is what you do. So our task is not to lament it.”

The Giants start the season 1-1 and will face the Tennessee Titans next.
