TOKYO — New Zealand’s foreign minister, Winston Peters, has confirmed that the nation will “seriously” assess the potential adoption of Japan’s Mogami-class frigate into its maritime defense forces. Speaking at a Nikkei event in Tokyo, Peters emphasized the strategic alignment between the two nations, particularly regarding interoperability with Australia’s navy—a key factor in New Zealand’s broader security planning in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Mogami-class frigate, known for its advanced stealth capabilities and modular design, could enhance New Zealand’s naval presence in contested waters. Peters also highlighted collaborative opportunities with Japan and Australia to bolster regional security, though no formal procurement discussions have been initiated. Domestic defense officials have yet to comment on technical or budgetary considerations.
