Newcastle United Secure Bosnian Defender Amar Dedic from Benfica in £29.5m Transfer

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Bosnia and Herzegovina international Amar Dedic from Benfica, securing the 24-year-old full-back on a five-year contract, reported to be worth £29.5m. The versatile defender becomes the sixth senior acquisition of the summer transfer window, donning the No 37 jersey at St James’ Park.

Dedic, who can operate effectively on both flanks, previously collaborated with Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle during his tenure at Red Bull Salzburg and Liefering. “Reuniting with Matthias was pivotal in my decision,” Dedic stated. “We have a strong understanding of each other’s playstyles, and I’m excited to contribute under his leadership again.”

Jaissle praised Dedic’s hybrid profile, noting, “He combines defensive resilience with attacking dynamism. His athleticism, technical aptitude, and forward-thinking mindset make him a valuable addition, with significant potential for growth in our system.”

Sporting director Ross Wilson described the player as a “versatile modern full-back capable of operating on either flank,” emphasizing that Dedic “will provide immediate reinforcement to our squad’s depth and competitiveness.”

The defender’s journey to Newcastle includes 95 appearances for Red Bull Salzburg, loan spells at Wolfsberger AC and Marseille, and a permanent move to Benfica last summer. He previously shone at St James’ Park during Benfica’s Champions League campaign and has earned 31 international caps for Bosnia and Herzegovina, including participation in the FIFA World Cup.
