NAROWAL – A newly married woman was allegedly strangled by her husband, who then set her body ablaze in an apparent attempt to facilitate a second marriage.
Ali Raza, a resident of Maloke village in Narowal district, lodged a police complaint stating that his sister, Nida Shaheen, had married Hammad Sohail of Ghaziwal three months earlier. Following the wedding, Hammad reportedly subjected Nida to daily abuse, motivated by his desire to take another wife.
On June 19, Hammad and his relatives allegedly assaulted Nida, expelled her from the home, and she sought refuge with her parents.
On June 27, Hammad visited his in‑laws, ostensibly reconciled with Nida, and brought her back to the marital residence. A fresh argument erupted, during which Hammad, his brother Bilal, and their parents allegedly tortured her. Hammad is said to have strangled Nida before setting her corpse on fire.
Upon receiving word of the incident, police arrived at the scene. The Saddar Narowal Police Station registered an FIR against Hammad, his brother Bilal, father Sohail, and mother Naseem based on the complaint filed by Nida’s brother.
The authorities have taken the suspects into custody, transferred the body to the District Headquarters Hospital in Narowal for autopsy, and are pursuing further legal proceedings.
