NFL Legend Aldon Smith Passes Away at 36 After Remarkable Career
Aldon Smith, the dynamic pass rusher who dominated the NFL in his early years, has died at the age of 36. The San Francisco 49ers confirmed his death in a statement, calling him a transformative player whose “undeniable talent and sheer dominance” defined his rookie season in 2011.
Drafting seventh overall in 2011, Smith recorded 33.5 sacks across his first 32 regular-season games, earning him second-place finish in defensive rookie of the year voting. His 2012 campaign earned first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors, and he started Super Bowl XLVII with the 49ers.
Despite off-field challenges, including a nine-game suspension in 2014 for substance abuse violations and subsequent releases by the 49ers and Raiders, Smith continued his NFL journey with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020, starting all 16 games. He briefly joined the Seattle Seahawks in 2021 before being released in August 2022.
The 49ers remembered Smith for more than his statistics, noting his “infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into.” Our thoughts are with Smith’s family, friends, and everyone affected by his passing.
