The National Football League has officially announced the removal of Denver Broncos outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper from the Commissioner’s Exempt List, reinstating him to the team’s active roster.
This decision allows Cooper to participate in the Broncos’ upcoming game on October 25, marking his return after a six-game absence due to the administrative leave.
Cooper was initially placed on paid leave by the NFL on August 30, following the emergence of domestic-related charges. These charges stem from two incidents involving his former girlfriend that occurred in June.
The legal proceedings saw Cooper’s motion hearing continued on Monday, at the request of the district attorney’s office. He is now scheduled for a motion hearing on February 23, with a jury trial planned for the week of March 2. It is important to note that the NFL season concludes with Super Bowl LXI on February 14.
Cooper is confronting five charges in total, arising from two disputes with his ex-girlfriend that originated from an altercation over a cell phone. The most serious charge against him is felony second-degree assault and strangulation.
Despite the ongoing legal challenges, Cooper had previously engaged in the Broncos’ training camp and participated in three preseason games after entering a plea of not guilty to all charges.
The financial implications of his suspension included a loss of $180,000 in per-game roster bonuses. However, Cooper was able to retain his six weekly game checks, each valued at $676,471, during his time on leave.
In an official statement, the NFL indicated that it will continue its investigation and monitor the legal matter involving Cooper until a definitive resolution is achieved.
