Brendan Sorsby’s pursuit of the NFL supplemental draft has sparked scrutiny over whether the league will admit him and whether Commissioner Roger Goodell will sanction him for underage gambling and betting on Indiana games while on the team’s roster. This comes amid uncertainty about how the NFL will handle similar cases to Terrelle Pryor’s 2011 suspension, which mirrored NCAA penalties for gambling violations.
The situation also draws parallels to Kayshon Boutte, who publicly addressed his college gambling addiction in a Players’ Tribune article earlier this year. Boutte described compulsively betting on platforms like FanDuel, sometimes placing wagers while unable to sleep due to insomnia, after an LSU injury ended his playing career. He placed over 8,900 bets, including at least six on LSU, until after his 2023 draft selection. Charges related to underage betting in Louisiana were eventually dismissed, and no NFL sanctions followed, despite Boutte having completed a full rookie season.
The NFL’s inaction in Boutte’s case, where the violations surfaced post-draft, contrasts with Sorsby’s pre-career disclosure. However, the league may still act given heightened focus on gambling issues and recent scandals across sports since Boutte’s 2024 arrest.
