NHL players, and brothers, Jack, Quinn and Luke Hughes have joined The Underground, a private golf society, as investor-partners.

Following his overtime goal that secured Olympic gold and the conclusion of the NHL season, Jack Hughes has turned his focus toward the golf course. However, his involvement goes far beyond simply playing the sport; he is actively investing in it.
At 25 years old, Hughes and his brothers—fellow NHL stars Quinn and Luke, all avid golfers—have become investor-partners in The Underground, an exclusive private golf society co-founded by actor and producer Mark Wahlberg. Their addition marks the latest move in a broader trend of professional athletes, entertainers, and business leaders backing the company, which occupies a distinctive niche within the golf industry.
Established in 2025 by Wahlberg, Doug Meijer, and Garry Singer, The Underground operates as a golf community centered on premium, precision-engineered golf balls. Members receive a year’s supply of 12 dozen balls, manufactured in small batches and sorted to tolerances that exceed those used by mainstream mass-market brands. The membership package also includes a curated collection of member-only apparel and accessories.
“If I’m not on the ice, there’s a good chance I’m on the golf course,” said Jack Hughes, a seventh-year center for the New Jersey Devils who rose to national prominence with his golden goal against Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics. “I’m always evaluating the latest in performance equipment, so I wanted to align with a company focused on creating the best golf ball possible. That’s the appeal of The Underground.”

The Underground is not aiming to compete directly with established golf ball brands. Similar to the exclusivity of private clubs, the company has deliberately limited its product supply, meaning the balls are never sold in retail stores or online. The society counts athletes, celebrities, and CEOs among its members, and the premium golf balls have also become a sought-after gifting option for spouses looking for a luxury present for a golfer who already possesses a comprehensive collection of gear.
“Once you see the caliber of people connected to this brand, it becomes a pretty easy decision,” said Quinn Hughes, an All-Star defenseman for the Minnesota Wild who also represented Team USA at the Olympics. “There are a lot of incredibly impressive people involved already, and that’s something that immediately stood out to me.”
The financial terms of the ownership stake have not been disclosed. Annual membership in The Underground starts at $2,800, with applications opening earlier this year.
“This is where golf is headed,” said Wahlberg, who lists The Underground among his diverse portfolio of business interests. “The sport is younger, more dynamic, and more connected to culture than ever before. Jack, Quinn, and Luke aren’t just world-class athletes; they’re passionate golfers who truly understand what we’re building. They’re joining us as partners because they believe in the vision and want to help shape what comes next.”
