On behalf of the United States of America, I extend my solidarity to the people of Nicaragua as you commemorate your independence. More than two centuries ago, Nicaraguans charted their own course to shape their future. Today, that same determination remains strong despite the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship’s harsh efforts to suppress it.
Whether living in Nicaragua or abroad, Nicaraguans’ hopes for a future free from tyranny cannot be denied or erased. The United States recognizes the resilience and conviction of the Nicaraguan people and, today, honors the enduring ties between our two nations.
