Nick Sirianni: New Eagles OC Sean Mannion has an “obsession to get better”

Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni highlights new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion’s impressive work ethic and preparation during the offseason. Despite his limited coaching experience, Mannion’s dedication to continuous improvement is evident.

“This individual truly loves football and puts in the effort,” Sirianni noted to Dave Zangaro of NBCPhiladelphia.com. “I’ve genuinely enjoyed observing him and his commitment. Often, we say things like ‘he’s talented’ or ‘he has it.’ But success requires more than talent. It needs this intense drive to progress, and Sean clearly demonstrates this intensity towards advancement through relentless effort in his field, which aligns with his outstanding performance.”

The 34-year-old Mannion brings unconventional experience to the position. With just two coaching seasons under his belt – as an offensive assistant in 2024 and quarterbacks coach in 2025 with the Green Bay Packers – and nine career years as an NFL quarterback (with only three career starts), he uniquely combines playing expertise with fresh perspectives. This novel approach could shape the Eagles’ offensive strategies in unexpected ways.

Sirianni addresses concerns about Mannion’s inexperience directly: “I’m completely confident, as he’s invested immense effort. He’ll maintain rigorous preparation and has strong support from veteran coaches like Grizzard, Frazier, and myself to guide his development.” The new coordinator benefits from direct mentorship during practices and reviews, ensuring rapid professional growth.

Mannion’s learning continues through hands-on training camp experiences. Sirianni actively creates challenging scenarios to prepare him: “My responsibility is to expose him to as many situations as possible for better decision-making. We’ve varied OTAs to simulate game conditions, including surprise pop quizzes. He must be prepared for any scenario on his call sheet.” These rigorous tests will help Mannion develop the split-second thinking required for high-pressure game moments.

While his innovative approach carries risks for the inexperienced coordinator, Sirianni remains confident in his selection. After half a year together, the coach sees tangible progress in Mannion’s ability to handle complex offensive play-calling situations.
