Abuja — Nigeria’s Davis Cup team departed the country early yesterday for Rabat, Morocco, ahead of its 2026 Davis Cup World Group II clash against Morocco, scheduled for September 19-20 at the Union Sportive des Cheminots de Tennis du Maroc.
The tie will be a stern test for Team Nigeria, which is seeking to overturn a difficult record after losing all four previous meetings with Morocco.
Travelling on Royal Air Maroc, the players are determined to represent Nigeria strongly in what is expected to be a highly competitive Davis Cup encounter.
The squad has spent the past three weeks in an intensive training camp, fine-tuning its preparations and strengthening team coordination ahead of the crucial tie. The objective is clear: secure a landmark victory and earn promotion to the Davis Cup World Group I.
The travelling players include Daniel Adeleye, Canice Abua, Michael Emmanuel and Yusuf Abubakar, with Benson Ishicheli serving as head coach. Adeleye played a leading role in Nigeria’s victory over Uzbekistan last February.
Rising star Oluwaseun Ogunsakin is expected to join the squad in Morocco, adding further strength to the team. Ogunsakin, who recently competed at Grand Slam events at Roland Garros and the US Open, will complete Nigeria’s five-man lineup.
Nigeria qualified for this stage for the first time in 30 years after a hard-fought win over Uzbekistan in February, setting up a major contest against Morocco.
With pride, history and promotion at stake, Team Nigeria will be aiming to change the course of the rivalry. The winner of the Morocco-Nigeria tie will secure a place in the Davis Cup World Group I.
