Nikita Kucherov has informed the Tampa Bay Lightning that he will not re-sign with the franchise and has requested a trade, potentially setting the stage for a blockbuster move involving one of the NHL’s most prolific offensive players.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Kucherov has communicated his decision to both his teammates and the organization. The reasoning behind his request remains undisclosed. General manager Julien BriseBois and Kucherov’s agent, Dan Milstein, declined to comment to Friedman. No preferred destination or timeline for a potential deal has been identified.
A Stunning Turn After a Franchise Milestone
The news arrives shortly after Kucherov surpassed Steven Stamkos as the Lightning’s all-time leading scorer. His milestone assist against the Utah Mammoth on Oct. 24 brought his career total to 1,138 points in 890 games, eclipsing Stamkos’ previous franchise record.

Kucherov entered the current campaign as the reigning Hart Trophy winner after posting 44 goals and 130 points in 2025–26. His sustained elite production makes the prospect of his departure especially significant for a Lightning roster constructed around a championship-caliber core.
Tampa Bay Faces a Major Decision
Kucherov is in the final year of his eight-year, $76 million contract, leaving BriseBois with a franchise-altering dilemma. The immediate priority is maximizing the return in any trade, ideally acquiring assets that keep Tampa Bay competitive while offsetting the offensive void his exit would create.
Any prospective suitor must weigh the acquisition cost against the uncertainty of Kucherov’s long-term commitment beyond this season. For now, the critical questions are whether either party addresses the report publicly and whether the Lightning begin fielding offers. While a trade request marks a major development, it does not guarantee a deal is imminent.
