Nine individuals have perished following a business jet crash into a residential neighborhood in South Florida, United States.
Every person on board was killed in the incident, which US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy characterized as a “horrific tragedy” in a social media post on Sunday.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) personnel were en route to the crash site to assist the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) with its investigation into the incident, Duffy announced.
Disturbing cockpit audio recordings shortly before the crash, archived by LiveATC.net, captured the pilot discussing “manageable” ice conditions before reporting that the aircraft was rapidly losing altitude.
Moments later, the panicked crew urgently stated, “We’re going to crash into the ground.”
The aircraft involved was a Learjet 60, a widely used business jet traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport confirmed that the plane was a private flight, though the identities of those on board were not immediately released.
Videos circulating online appear to capture the jet striking the ground at high speed on a steep angle, immediately followed by a massive explosion.
Aftermath footage depicts flames flickering amidst scattered debris and chunks of pavement, with individuals seen gathering and moving around the site.
The aircraft appeared to have come down just meters away from homes and vehicles, but Florida Governor Ron DeSantis informed reporters that there were no ground casualties.
Speaking directly from the scene, Governor DeSantis described the crash as “cataclysmic,” noting that the plane “looked like a missile going down” and left a substantial crater on the side of the road.
