SINGAPORE — Australia’s NIOA Group and U.S. defense technology company AeroVironment have announced a strategic partnership aimed at delivering advanced loitering munitions capabilities to Australia and New Zealand.
The collaboration was unveiled at the ongoing Land Forces defense exhibition in Australia, where the companies stated their intention to jointly support the deployment, maintenance, and future expansion of loitering munitions systems throughout the region.
Under the agreement, NIOA will serve as AeroVironment’s local partner for sales, customer engagement, technical support, and long-term capability development. The partnership includes access to AeroVironment’s combat-proven Switchblade family of precision loitering munitions.
Both organizations also plan to explore opportunities to enhance local industrial capabilities and provide sustained support for Australian Defence Force (ADF) operations. This aligns with Australia’s recent defense initiatives, particularly the 2024 Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) plan, which outlines the ADF’s goal of integrating Switchblade 300 systems by 2025.
“This partnership leverages NIOA’s extensive experience in munitions supply, manufacturing, and support alongside AeroVironment’s global leadership in autonomous systems and loitering munitions,” said Ben James, NIOA’s Executive Vice President for Australia and New Zealand. “It strengthens interoperability between Australian and U.S. defense industries while enhancing operational readiness for the ADF.”
Justin McFarlin, Vice President of International Business Development at AeroVironment, emphasized the strategic importance of working with a trusted regional partner. “By combining our proven technologies with NIOA’s local expertise, we can better serve customers, reinforce sovereign defense capabilities, and build a foundation for continued growth across the Asia-Pacific region,” he said.
