North Korea Dominate Bangladesh 10-0 in Asian Games Women’s Football Opener

North Korea, enjoying support in the stands, were seven goals ahead by half-time and are among the favourites for the gold medal.

North Korea’s powerful women’s football team launched their Asian Games campaign with a commanding 10-0 victory over Bangladesh in Osaka, Japan, backed by several hundred pro-Pyongyang supporters in the stands.

The North Koreans, who have excelled internationally at the youth level, are regarded as among the top contenders for the gold medal in Japan.

The team proved far too strong for Bangladesh, racing to a seven-goal lead by half-time on Monday.

Striker Ri Song-a, who was born and raised in Japan, started in North Korea’s lineup and found the net in the second half.

A large contingent of North Korean fans, dressed in red, provided a vibrant atmosphere throughout the match, singing and chanting in support of their team.

The men’s and women’s football teams were greeted by supporters waving flags upon their arrival for the games last week, donning white blazers and pink ties.

More than 100 North Koreans are expected to compete across 14 sports at the Games, which will take place in Nagoya-Aichi and officially open on September 19.

North Korea suspended its participation in international sporting competitions during the COVID-19 pandemic but made its return at the Asian Games in China in 2023 and also competed at the Paris Olympics.

North Korea’s women’s team face South Korea in a Group F clash on September 21.

The men’s team begin their campaign against China on Wednesday.
