On Saturday, North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward waters off its eastern coastline, according to South Korean and Japanese officials. This marks the nation’s latest missile test this year, occurring just one day after it dismissed Seoul’s claim that landmines had injured its personnel.
The South Korean military reported the projectile departed from the Wonsan region near 6:30 a.m. Saturday, traveling a distance exceeding 700 kilometers (434 miles). Allied command in Seoul and Washington are currently examining data from the test for further specifics.
Citing the Japanese defense ministry, the Japan Coast Guard issued an advisory noting the object was potentially a ballistic missile and appeared to have impacted, urging maritime vessels in the area to exercise caution.
Seoul’s armed forces stated they have elevated their surveillance readiness regarding potential additional missile tests and pledged to coordinate intelligence sharing with the United States and Japan.
The National Security Council at South Korea’s presidential office convened an emergency session Saturday to evaluate the developing situation following the launch, the office confirmed.
Pyongyang has conducted missile tests more than ten times this year, occasionally asserting it is evaluating novel weapon systems. Several of these exercises followed Seoul and Washington’s joint military drills, which North Korea had protested.
The test followed Friday’s statement from Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of supreme leader Kim Jong Un, which rejected Seoul’s demand for an apology regarding landmines that allegedly seriously injured South Korean troops in the Demilitarized Zone, the fortified buffer region separating the two states.
Earlier this week, South Korea reported that North Korean mines were responsible for an explosion that critically injured two soldiers conducting a reconnaissance patrol within the 4-kilometer-wide border zone spanning the peninsula.
Cheong Seong-chang, vice president of Seoul’s Sejong Institute, a think tank specializing in North Korean affairs, suggested the launch may be intended to provoke a reaction from Seoul regarding the sister’s statement. He added it is possible Pyongyang was testing a new missile variant.
In recent years, North Korea has significantly escalated its antagonism toward the South, officially renouncing unification as a national objective and designating South Korea as its “primary foe.”
