Northampton Saints secured a commanding 71-48 victory over Bath in the second-highest-scoring Gallagher Premiership match ever recorded.
A staggering eighteen tries were scored in total, as the Saints bounced back emphatically from their previous defeat against Bristol Bears.
Ollie Sleightholme claimed a hat-trick during an extraordinary afternoon at Franklin’s Gardens, where a remarkable 119 points were accumulated.
“We executed our game plan perfectly on the field,” Sleightholme told TNT Sports. “Although conceding so many points isn’t ideal, we have identified areas for improvement.”
“Playing for this team is incredible. We consistently create scoring chances and make the most of every opportunity that comes our way.”
“The atmosphere was electric. It’s been a while since I’ve experienced such intensity, and it’s wonderful to be back playing in front of our fans.”
Furthermore, the Saints were involved in the highest-scoring match in Premiership history when they scored 14 tries to defeat Bristol Bears 94-33 at Franklin’s Gardens in May.
This remarkable tally of 127 points established a new record for the highest-scoring match in English top-flight rugby union history, surpassing the previous mark of 118 points set in Richmond’s 106-12 victory over Bedford in 1999.
Northampton opened the scoring after just seven minutes when Fin Smith sliced through a defensive gap for the opening try, though he failed to convert the kick.
Bath responded swiftly and effectively as Finn Russell’s offload created space for Arthur Green, whose interior pass allowed Tom Carr-Smith to score easily, with Russell converting the kick.
Three minutes later, Bath struck again from a tapped penalty, with Carr-Smith delivering a wide pass to Charlie Griffin for a corner finish, which Russell successfully converted.
The Saints quickly retaliated through exceptional handling play, as Tommy Freeman offloaded to James Pater, whose long pass released Ollie Sleightholme into space, with Smith’s conversion reducing the deficit to just two points.
Following Josh Bayliss’ sin-binning for infringing near his own line, Northampton capitalized on the numerical advantage when Smith’s pass enabled Tommy Freeman to score under the posts, giving the Saints the lead.
Despite being reduced to fourteen players, Bath fought back vigorously to level the scores at 19-19, with tight-forward Archie Griffin powering over from close range on the right flank.
Bath then took the lead as Kepu Tuipulotu broke through inadequate tackling to release Green for a straightforward try, although the Saints immediately restored parity when captain Fraser Dingwall pierced the defense with a solo run.
Russell’s penalty with the last kick of the first half gave Bath a 29-26 advantage at halftime, and they extended their lead early in the second half when Carr-Smith created the opportunity for Green’s second try of the match.
The Saints briefly closed the gap to three points when Pater scored after a fumble by Carreras off Russell’s pass, but the Argentine fullback immediately responded by collecting a looping pass from Russell for an easy try.
Northampton retaliated once more as Josh Kemeny touched down in the corner following a pass from Alex Coles, bringing the combined try tally to twelve in just fifty-one minutes of play.
The Saints regained the lead when Alex Mitchell gathered his own grubber kick to score individually, and Sleightholme’s second try shortly afterward elevated the home team’s score to fifty points.
The relentless pace continued as Sleightholme rounded off his hat-trick with a try under the posts, although Bayliss got one back for Bath before Smith’s powerful run created the opportunity for Coles to score.
There was still time for one final try, as intricate passing involving Rory Hutchinson and Anthony Belleau released Tommy Freeman for his second score of the match — Northampton’s eleventh try of an astonishing afternoon.
