The most striking development from the College Football Playoff Committee’s initial rankings was Notre Dame’s seven-position drop from the previous AP Poll. Across the sports media landscape, the consensus emerged quickly: a loss to Miami this weekend would effectively end Notre Dame’s playoff aspirations.
Setting aside any skepticism about Notre Dame’s unique position in college football, it may be premature to treat Saturday’s matchup as a do-or-die contest. If Notre Dame secures a victory as a seven-point favorite, the debate becomes moot. Looking ahead, two of the Irish’s final three games will be played at home in South Bend, with their only remaining road trip scheduled for Syracuse. Based on the current slate, additional defeats do not appear inevitable.
Even beyond simply winning to quiet the discussion, I believe Notre Dame can still secure a playoff berth with a victory. Notably, their current ranking may actually overstate their standing, as they sit ahead of several two-loss Big Ten and SEC opponents that boast signature victories over ranked foes. That said, another high-profile loss would damage their prospects, but how far should they fall following a defeat to the nation’s top-ranked team?
Alabama currently occupies fifth place in the CFP rankings, yet the Crimson Tide have appeared largely unremarkable aside from an early-season victory over Kentucky—a program that could plausibly finish with four losses. ESPN has attributed Alabama’s placement to its win over Mississippi State, though that Bulldogs unit struggled throughout the season regardless of Kamario Taylor’s availability.
Nevertheless, the underlying metrics continue to favor Notre Dame despite a résumé lacking marquee victories. The Irish rank 11th in SOR, lead the nation in FPI, and sit sixth in game control. They are also just a touchdown behind the country’s top team. Should Notre Dame fall this weekend, a subsequent win against a capable SMU team could still position them to climb back into the top 12 before the season concludes.
The Big Ten and SEC have repeatedly diminished one another throughout the season, a trend unlikely to reverse in the final weeks. Unless the committee takes an extraordinary step—such as removing Notre Dame from the top 20 after a loss—the Irish should remain in contention when the final rankings are released. A top-12 position guarantees a playoff spot under the current format. Perhaps most significantly, following last season’s decision to exclude Notre Dame, there is strong incentive among decision-makers to include one of college football’s most valuable television markets in the postseason.
