Following an ambitious winter transfer window in early 2026, FIFA imposed a transfer embargo on Santos in early July due to an outstanding debt to Monaco regarding the acquisition of midfielder Jean Lucas, who currently represents Bahia. Unable to register new signings during the summer window, the club’s primary squad adjustment was the sale of defender Adonis Frias to Atlas for 3.1 million euros after just 11 months with the club, leaving the roster thin on depth and requiring urgent funds to satisfy the FIFA ruling.

To resolve the administrative impasse, Neymar and NR Sports agency intervened to provide the essential funding needed to settle the debt, restoring the club’s transfer market eligibility. Santos officially confirmed the transaction in a club statement on Thursday, August 27, disclosing a capital injection of 12 million reals (approximately $2.3 million USD) from the agency to satisfy the outstanding judgment.

The official statement from Santos read as follows: “Santos FC has discharged its Transfer Ban and regains market eligibility. This operation was made possible through the support of NR Sports, providing the club with immediate financial injection. In exchange, Santos FC and the company will jointly negotiate kit sponsorship rights that remain uncommercialized.“

This rescue package represents another financial arrangement between Santos and NR Sports as the club continues to manage an estimated total debt of 13 million pounds. With the embargo lifted, Santos can now proceed with finalizing the signing of former Juventus and Barcelona midfielder Arthur Melo, who has emerged as the club’s primary transfer target according to Spanish outlet Diario Sport.

Neymar’s return season in 2025 failed to meet expectations, with Santos narrowly avoiding consecutive relegation battles in the closing weeks of the Brasileirao while securing a place in the Copa Sudamericana.
