NT Police Reopen Investigation into 25-Year-Old Murder of British Backpacker Peter Falconio

Northern Territory Police have opened sealed evidence containers, revealing previously undisclosed photographs from the investigation into the murder of British backpacker Peter Falconio and the attempted abduction of his partner, Joanne Lees.

Tuesday marks the 25th anniversary of this notorious outback disappearance.

Bradley John Murdoch was found guilty of the 28‑year‑old’s murder; however, he passed away on July 15, 2025 without ever confessing to the crime or revealing where Falconio’s remains were hidden.

The images capture a stunned Joanne Lees in the hours following her encounter with Murdoch on a remote stretch of the Stuart Highway on the fateful evening of July 14, 2001.

One photograph shows Murdoch as captured by police, staring directly at the camera.

Although Murdoch received a life sentence, NT Police Commissioner Martin Dole noted that the investigation into Falconio’s murder would remain open until his remains were discovered.

A $500,000 reward continues to be offered for any information that leads directly to the discovery of Falconio’s remains.

“No piece of information is too small; what may appear insignificant could be crucial in finally resolving this case,” Dole stated.
