Former President Barack Obama criticized the Trump administration’s approach to Iran and rising consumer costs during a campaign rally in Cleveland on Saturday, supporting Democratic candidates ahead of the November midterm elections.
At the event, Obama advocated for candidates Amy Acton and Sherrod Brown, with plans to continue campaigning in Detroit for Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed.
Meanwhile, President Trump cast his early vote in Florida and was set to travel to Georgia for a Republican rally later that same day.
Early voting has commenced across the country in advance of the November 3 election, which is expected to determine congressional control for the remainder of Trump’s term.
Speaking in Cleveland, Ohio, Obama directly challenged Trump and his administration, accusing the president of failing to reduce expenses for American families while escalating tensions with Iran.
“If you thought things were expensive before, you know who — everything is more expensive now,” Obama remarked, referencing Trump.
He acknowledged the frustration of voters who supported Democrats in the 2024 presidential election due to economic and inflation concerns following the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, Obama argued that Trump bears responsibility for the current economic challenges, stating, “This election is our last best chance to rein in some of the administration’s missteps.”
“This is a circuit breaker in the system. We need to flip that circuit breaker. We need to start bringing accountability to this administration,” Obama said, emphasizing the importance of the midterms.
When questioned about the ongoing conflict in Iran, Trump told reporters, “I’ve handled it very effectively and may need to finish it off, or perhaps a deal will be made — either way, we win.”
Trump and First Lady Melania Trump submitted their ballots early in Florida before heading to Georgia. When asked about a potential visit to Ukraine by Melania Trump, the president responded, “We’ll see,” following White House statements that she had “successfully secured” a temporary ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky.
