The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago officially opened to the public on Friday, marking a significant milestone for the former U.S. president and First Lady Michelle Obama.
The 20-acre site hosted thousands of visitors, showcasing a museum, library, conference spaces, gardens, recreational areas, and artistic installations. The center, entirely funded by private donations through the Obama Foundation, emphasizes public engagement without relying on public funds.
The Obamas initiated the event with a “story time for children and families,” highlighting themes of imagination and education. A reading of Maurice Sendak’s 1963 book “Where the Wild Things Are” was central to the ceremony, reflecting the Obamas’ tradition of sharing the story during Obama’s presidency.
Quotes from Emily Bittner, vice president of communications for the center, underscored the facility’s mission to inspire youth. Bittner stated, “The Center is designed to help young people find their voices, explore ideas, and develop confidence to shape future communities.”
Actress LeVar Burton, known for “Roots,” joined Michelle Obama and Mychal Threets during the event, reinforcing the center’s focus on cultural and educational outreach.
Located in Jackson Park along Lake Michigan, the eight-story building cost $850 million to construct. The opening followed a private preview for 3,000 guests, including former officials like Presidents Bill Clinton and Joe Biden, Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, and various political and entertainment figures.
Notably, President Donald Trump, who has criticized the Obamas, was excluded. His response included an AI-generated image of the center with a trash bag on its roof. The event also featured performances by artists like Bono, Stevie Wonder, and John Legend.
