OHIO, USA: Caleb Flynn, a former music pastor who briefly appeared on “American Idol,” was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the possibility of parole. A jury convicted him the previous week of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, while he was having an affair.

The judge said Flynn, 40, used his Christian faith to manipulate others and showed no remorse for actions marked by “layers of deceit, manipulation and cruelty.”

Before the sentencing, Flynn apologized tearfully to his family, beginning with his two young daughters, who were home when he shot their mother. He called their births “the greatest joy in this life.” Although he said he accepted responsibility for his words and decisions, Flynn maintained he was innocent.

“As I stand here before God, who is my ultimate judge, I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife,” he said.

Prosecutors alleged that Flynn staged a February home invasion, claiming a burglar killed Ashley, a 37‑year‑old schoolteacher and volleyball coach. Flynn had credited his wife for encouraging him to pursue his singing dream during his 2013 appearance on “American Idol.” He did not advance to the Hollywood rounds.

During the trial Flynn did not testify, nor did any defense witnesses.

Family members, including Ashley’s parents, supported the harsh sentence while saying they had forgiven Flynn because they did not want hatred to define her legacy. Her sister, Kayla Keyt, said Flynn’s actions left scars on their church community, prompting children to rush into their parents’ bedrooms to ensure their fathers had not killed their mothers.

An emotional moment came when a statement written by Flynn’s daughter Ava was read aloud, causing Flynn to sob uncontrollably. Another daughter, Alyssa, said she would not visit him in prison. “Mommy was the perfect person,” Ava’s statement read. “What did she ever do to you to make you hate her so much?”

In closing arguments, prosecutors told jurors that Flynn wanted out of his marriage when he shot his wife at their Tipp City residence, a suburb north of Dayton. He texted his lover the night before the shooting: “I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow.”

Alleigha Botner testified she met Flynn in 2022 while interning at his church and had an affair with him for more than a year. She told jurors Flynn expressed hatred for his wife and had thoughts of killing her.

The murder weapon was not recovered. The defense argued investigators found no evidence that Caleb Flynn fired a gun that day, but prosecutors linked his fingerprints and DNA to the scene and showed his devices tracked his movements around the house, contradicting his claim that he was asleep at the time of the shooting.

The jury found him guilty of multiple counts, including murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence.
