International oil operators active in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region have halted production immediately, according to Iraqi officials and regional industry sources, who spoke to Al-Monitor under strict anonymity. They cited rising violence between Iran and the United States as the reason.

This move follows Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s inaugural official visit to the United States, during which Iraq signed dozens of agreements—including formal contracts and memoranda of understanding—with American firms, predominantly in the oil sector. A central request from the Trump administration is that Baghdad ensure security guarantees for U.S. companies operating in Iraq.
Earlier in March, Texas‑based HKN was compelled to cease production after an Iran‑backed militia, Kataib Hezbollah, attacked its Sarsang field in Dohuk province.
