Eccentric musician Oliver Tree, recognized for viral songs such as “Alien Boy” and “Life Goes On,” passed away at the age of 32 following a helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro.
Tree was among six people killed when two helicopters collided mid‑air over the city. Police confirmed that he was aboard one of the aircraft.
Born Oliver Tree Nickell, he first garnered a following by self‑releasing music online in the 2010s, including a Thom Yorke‑approved cover of Radiohead’s “Karma Police” on his debut EP Demons.
After graduating from CalArts, Tree returned to music in 2016 with the single “Welcome to LA.” Known for his distinctive style and self‑directed videos, he became a popular figure on TikTok and the festival circuit, culminating with his debut album Ugly Is Beautiful in 2020.
His second album Cowboy Tears – described as “a country album for people who don’t like country” – was released in 2022, followed by Alone in a Crowd in 2023. Earlier this year, Tree returned to independent roots with the album Love You Madly Hate You Badly under his Alien Boy Records label.
In May, Tree announced his first world tour. The South American leg began on May 30 in Mexico and concluded with his final performance on June 6 in São Paulo.
