During a surprise appearance at Primavera Sound, Rodrigo unveiled “What’s Wrong With Me,” marking her first-ever feature. She invited her longtime idol, Robert Smith of The Cure, to join her on stage.

The song blends breezy pop sensibilities with introspective lyrics that explore a relationship that no longer feels authentic. The pre‑chorus captures a moment of clarity: “I’m not feeling like myself, and nothing ever seems to help,” leading into a confession that the partner is at the heart of her struggle.

A History of Collaboration

The partnership grew out of a friendship that began at Glastonbury 2025, where Rodrigo headlined and invited Smith to perform The Cure’s “Friday I’m in Love” and “Just Like Heaven.” She introduced him to the audience as “perhaps the greatest songwriter to come out of England” and a personal hero.

Smith, now 66, has been the driving force behind The Cure since its formation in 1976, delivering classics such as “Friday I’m in Love,” which has amassed over a billion streams on Spotify.

In a note to British Vogue ahead of Rodrigo’s upcoming album, Smith recalled discovering her music after hearing “drivers license,” subsequently purchasing both SOUR and GUTS on CD. He praised the quality of her songwriting despite generational differences and mentioned memorable studio sessions focused on fashion and creativity.

Rodrigo weaves Smith’s influence into the new record. On the chart‑topping lead single “Drop Dead,” she references The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” in the opening verse, and the album features a track titled “The Cure,” underscoring the thematic link.

Implications for the Upcoming Album

Olivia Rodrigo’s third studio effort, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, is slated for release on Friday, June 12, 2026. The record is structured as a two‑act narrative — “for a girl so in love” and “you seem pretty sad” — with “What’s Wrong With Me” appearing in the second act. The Unravelled Tour, supporting the album, will launch in North America in September before heading to Europe in spring 2027; all dates have sold out.
