JEHLUM: A 4.8‑magnitude earthquake struck Jhelum’s Pind Dadan Khan tehsil on Tuesday, causing significant damage to several houses and resulting in one fatality and 11 injuries, the local administration reported.
Jhelum Deputy Commissioner Mir Reza Ozgen stated that the tremor was first felt in the Jalalpur Sharif area of the tehsil. He confirmed that roughly ten homes suffered severe damage and that a person lost their life in the incident.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) logged the earthquake at 7:06 pm, with a depth of 12 km and an epicentre 58 km southwest of Jhelum (latitude 32.59 N, longitude 73.23 E).
“Police, rescue teams and the local administration are present at the site. Further search and assessment of the area are underway,” the DC added.
Jhelum District Emergency Officer Farhan Mirza said Rescue 1122 received a call at 7:09 pm reporting that the first floor of a house had collapsed, trapping people under the rubble in Pind Dadan Khan. The emergency team arrived within eight minutes, finding six injured individuals and a teenage boy who had died.
Residents in Sagharpur, Daryala Jalip, Haranpur and Jaitypur reported feeling the quake, while Jalalpur Sharif and Pindi Saidpur were identified as the most heavily affected areas.
The PMD also recorded a 5.2‑magnitude earthquake at 10:56 am on May 4 that was felt in Islamabad and Rawalpindi; its epicentre lay near the Tajikistan‑Xinjiang border at a depth of 128 km. Earlier, on April 3, a 6.1‑magnitude quake struck at 9:13 pm with a 190 km depth, centered in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region and shaking Islamabad, Chitral, Peshawar, Swat and Shangla.
Pakistan’s position at the convergence of the Arabian, Euro‑Asian and Indian tectonic plates creates five seismic zones, making frequent tectonic activity a reality for the region.
