Trump signed an executive order renaming the water body Lake America, declaring the decree effective immediately.
Although the US president has broad authority over domestic landmark recognition, foreign nations are not obligated to comply. Canadian officials have firmly rejected the renaming.
On Saturday, Trump shared several AI-generated videos on social media. One depicted him kicking over a Lake Ontario sign and replacing it with a new one reading “Welcome to Lake America.”
Another video showed a flock of Canada geese wearing the US president’s signature hair and carrying rifles as they patrolled the shores of the newly christened Lake America.
Premier Ford stated that the renaming stemmed from Trump’s displeasure with Ontario and Canada standing up for themselves.
Standing before the newly installed sign, Ford emphasized: “Just in case President Trump or anyone else forgets, we have erected this marker to remind them: it is Lake Ontario, now and forever.”
This stance mirrors Prime Minister Mark Carney’s earlier response to the dispute, where he insisted, “Things must be called by their name, and this lake is called Lake Ontario—today and forever.”
