A few months ago, Bettinardi launched the BB1 Fitz Flow putter alongside the BB48 FITZ, both crafted to match Matt Fitzpatrick’s preferences.

Fitzpatrick typically relies on the blade‑style BB1 FF, a putter that has become a Tour staple, while the BB48 offers his signature face‑milling in a more forgiving mallet shape for players seeking a blend of precision and forgiveness.

The two models were re‑released in retail versions yesterday, a move driven by the conditions encountered at the Open.

During the championship, Fitzpatrick noticed his usual BB1 FF’s smooth sole slipping on the firm, quick greens overseas. The slipping disrupted the start of his putting stroke and eroded his confidence on the greens.

To address the issue, Bettinardi added a milled honey‑comb pattern to the sole of the putter. The textured surface improves grip on the putting surface and helps lock the putter in place when Fitzpatrick sets it behind the ball. His custom head, part of the Bettinardi HIVE line, also features his personal bumper stamp and the Bettinardi Wizard logo on the sole.

The innovation has already been incorporated into the retail version of the putter. Although the commercial model’s milling is slightly different—reminiscent of Bettinardi’s Queen Bee series—it provides the same performance benefits.

This niche adjustment proved effective for Fitzpatrick at the Open, showcasing how a small sole treatment can address surface challenges and restore a player’s putting confidence wherever the game takes them.
