OpenAI Introduces New Parental Notification System for Teen Safety on ChatGPT

Parents with linked teen accounts will be notified if their children breach OpenAI’s policies on violent threats or acts of violence.

OpenAI will now alert parents and guardians whose teenage accounts are linked to theirs if the child is removed from ChatGPT for breaching policies prohibiting violent threats or acts of violence. The parental‑control features introduced last year let parents connect their accounts to their teens’, set usage windows, and filter sensitive material, and they already receive alerts if the chatbot indicates a possible self‑harm intent. Building on this, OpenAI is now adding alerts that signal when a teen may pose a risk to others.

The company illustrated this with an example alert that informs a parent of an “important update” concerning their child’s account. By selecting “Learn More,” the parent can view a detailed notice stating that the child’s account has been deactivated for violating the usage policy on violent acts.

Moonshot, a specialist in monitoring and countering online violence, collaborated with OpenAI on this feature. According to Moonshot founder Vidhya Ramalingam, “Alerting a parent at the first sign of a serious concern, with a path to additional context, is a vital first step in enabling families to intervene early and seek help.” She added that such notifications are just one of many measures required to enhance youth safety on ChatGPT.

OpenAI pledged to reinforce its safety protocols following revelations that the 2025 Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia mass‑shooting suspect had used ChatGPT. Canadian officials requested clarification after learning the company had not reported the shooter’s account ban to authorities. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman publicly apologized for the lapse.

Alongside the new alert system, OpenAI is adding a Study Mode toggle within parental controls. This mode provides gentle hints before responses to assist students with learning and research. The platform will also display more frequent break reminders to teenage users who engage with ChatGPT for extended periods, encouraging healthier technology habits.
